OPT Clinic (Oral Placement Therapy)

Oral Placement Therapy (OPT) is an innovative and specialized program which utilizes a combination of

To the mouth to improve oral motor skill necessary for speech and swallowing.it is a tactile –proprioceptive teaching technique which accompanies traditional therapy.

OPT is used to enhance articulation awareness, placement (dissociation, grading, and direction of movement), stability and muscle memory.

Who will benefit:

OPT can be used with children of different ages and ability levels.it can be applicable for many of the clients, who have often received traditional auditory and visually based speech therapy, with minimal benefit.
It can be incorporated into many types of speech disorders such as

  • Apraxia of speech
  • Dysarthria
  • ASD
  • Down syndrome
  • Sensory processing deficits
  • Hearing impairments
  • Cleft lip and palate

How does it work?

  • OPT trains oral structural placement to children who cannot produce or imitate speech sounds using traditional auditory or visual input, for these clients,it is critical to start speech sound production from very basic level ( from phonemes) and other similar oral movements that the client can already produce.
  • Once a client can produce a targeted speech sounds, then speech therapy can continue in a more particularly designed manner.
  • A speech therapist systematically conducts regular speech language sessions along with OPT sessions in order to ensure best outcome.
